Building a Bed

We have been slowly working on this little house of ours... Everyone that comes says how great of a little house it is. "Yes," I say while inwardly cringing. I know they are seeing all the things we bought this place for - the land, the ocean, the quiet, the trees, the apple orchards, the fields, and really, a nice little house. But... it needs a lot of cosmetic work and before that it needs some important work - like making it a 2 bedroom instead of a one bedroom, making the furnace room into a mudroom to capture the mess of those seafaring children running to and fro everyday and putting in a woodstove because we are taking out the furnace and... my list is long. But do-able. Both Soren and I can do the work if we can find the timeand it is exciting to work with such a small space. I am focused on zero waste and less, less, less and it feels SO very good.
Soren worked hard this summer on taking out a leather and wood bar in the kitchen to make space for our table and turn the dining space into the living room and built a wall to make the living room our bedroom. A lot? Yes. But do you know Soren? No problem.
And he had lots of little helpers...

 Or distractions?
Hm... Well, either way you look at it, he couldn't do it without them. Really. They would not have let him.
Thankfully outside in the summer called often enough... Fun through and through and some of the work did eventually get done.

We have a beautiful bedroom to show for it and the kids have their own room now too!
My Dad helped us out in the special way he always helps out. This summer, the kids helped him chop down and pull out a beautiful cherry tree. Then took it to his sawmill and watched him begin to carve it into boards.
He took my crazy sketch and verbal description and built it into this:
A super special three-tiered bunkbed! We love it. It is beautiful, strong and takes up little space so all three sweet peas will have their own secret sleepy nook and plenty of space for toys and books in their room. I am so thankful for all the hard work everyone is putting into this place to make it ours - slowly, bit by bit, summer to winter - it is changing and it feels so good to make it our own cozy little home.
